Arbeitskreis Geschichte der Dinge. Technik. Kultur

"The sun is reflected in the coffee spoon". With this oft-quoted sentence, Sigfried Giedion almost poetically evoked the importance of everyday things. Above all, material culture research, ethnology and cultural history are concerned with the cultural and social significance of things, they way they are utilized and appropriated, and what they symbolize.

The study group History of Things. Technology. Culture. Design was founded in Berlin in October 2008 and is a study group of the Society for the History of Technology. Given the nature of the subject of study, the history of technology is concerned per se with artefacts. It examines (technical) material culture and therefore focuses on artefacts themselves more intensively than other historical disciplines do. It researches the creation, development and application of artefacts in their economic, social and cultural context. It studies the technical actions of agents and the forms of knowledge required in those actions, and considers the utilization and appropriation of artefacts.

The history of technology is hence closely linked to the history of things. The study group is an association of researchers and scholars who examine the history of things from the viewpoint of the history of technology, and whose field of work lies where the history of design and the history of technology intersect.
