Europäische Mobilitätskonzepte und die Konstruktion des Autos als akustischer Kokon, 1930–1970
Das Projekt untersucht die Geschichte des Automobil Sound-Designs in Europa und die Entwicklung des Automobils zu einem akustischen Kokon: hierzu werden die Kontrolle der Außengeräusche sowie die Akustik im Autoinneren zwischen 1930 und 1970 in den Blick genommen. Beide Stränge technologischer Entwicklung sind eng miteinander verflochten und müssen im weiteren historischen Kontext der Lärmbekämpfung und der sogenannten ‚Prothetisierung’ der Automobiltechnik gesehen werden. Darüber hinaus analysiert das Projekt die versteckte Integration Europas durch die Zirkulation und Aneignung von Wissen im Automobil Sound-Design und verwandten Bereichen zwischen bzw. in verschiedenen europäischen Staaten. Auf einer weiteren Ebene fragt das Projekt danach, wie der automobile ‚akustische Kokon’ integraler Teil des gemeinsamen europäischen Systems von Korridor-Autobahnen wurde.

Mobility Concepts and the Construction of the Car as Acoustic Cocoon in Europe, 1930–1970
This project will unravel the European history of car sound design and the rise of the car as ‘acoustic cocoon’ by focusing on exterior car noise control and interior car acoustics between 1930 and 1970. Both domains of technological development have been intricately related, and should be understood in the wider cultural context of noise abatement and the so-called ‘prosthetisation’ of the car. Furthermore this project contributes to the understanding of hidden integration by analysing the circulation and appropriation of knowledge about car sound design and related technologies across European nation states. In addition, this project foregrounds how the rise of the ‘acoustic cocoon’ became part and parcel of a European car system in which ‘corridor’ highways became the standard.
